Several qualifying conditions in Alaska permit residents to attain a medical cannabis card. They include:

Cachexia, or wasting syndrome
Cancer
Chronic pain
Epilepsy
Glaucoma
HIV/AIDS
Multiple sclerosis
Muscle spasms

According to state guidelines, any patient applying for a license must have a signed physician statement detailing the qualifying condition that makes the applicant eligible. Additionally, any patient must have had a physical examination within 16 months prior to applying.

Applications for Alaska medical cards must be submitted through the mail. Applications containing errors or expired documents will take longer to process.
Potential patients must finish the following to join the Alaska Medical Marijuana Registry (MMR):

Obtain a physician’s written recommendation, either online or in person.
Submit a valid Alaska driver’s license or ID to establish residency.
Designate a caregiver and submit a valid caregiver’s registration ID, if applicable.
Write a check or money order to pay the initial fee of $25 or a renewal fee of $20.
Mail your application to the Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics, Marijuana Registry.

The state application fee for an AK medical card is $25. The fee to renew your card after one year is $20. You’ll have to pay this fee each time you apply for an MMJ card.

If a patient is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must be the primary caregiver for the applicant, who will also apply for a registered card to both purchase and monitor use for the patient. A caregiver is only allowed to hold a card for one patient at a time unless they are blood relatives, in which case two cards can be held.

Caregivers must be:

Permanent Alaska residents
At least 21 or older
Listed by the patient as a primary or alternate caregiver
Free of felony convictions related to controlled substances
Approved under the Alaska medical marijuana program as a caregiver.
Have their names included on their patients’ applications to the state’s medical marijuana program.

Alaska MMJ

Adults 21 years of age or
older in Alaska can buy up to one ounce (1 oz), or 28.5 grams, of dry cannabis or 7 grams of concentrates.

Patients with medical cards must follow the same limits. No more than 5,600 milligrams of combined THC products can be purchased in a day.

Recreational and medicinal cannabis cultivation is legal in Alaska with certain growing restrictions.

Any adult Alaska resident can grow up to six plants per person, with no more than three 3 of the plants in the flowering phase. If more than one adult is in the household, you can have more plants. However, no more than twelve (12) complete plants per residence are permitted, of which only six (6) can be mature at a time.

Cannabis plants must be kept out of sight in an enclosed area and are not legal for sale.

A medical marijuana card in Alaska is valid for one year.

Along with having a qualifying condition, a patient must be a resident of the state with a driver’s license or identification verifying proof of address, be at least 18-years-old, provide the $25 application fee, and have a physician’s certification confirming qualifying conditions.
